Frontier search is the escape hatch.

Most subgoals close cheaply. Five tiers handle them deterministically, efficiently, and verifiably. Each tier passes only what it cannot discharge to the next. Tree search over a frontier model — the most expensive option by twelve orders of magnitude — sits at the bottom of the ladder, not the top. The ladder is the move available.

A subgoal enters at T0. Each tier is tried in order. If it discharges the goal, the ladder stops and the kernel records the closure. If not, the subgoal falls to the next tier. The total energy cost is the cumulative work of every tier that ran.

BUILT-IN TACTICS CLOSE THE GOAL

Tactics shipped with the proof assistant: simp (rewriting), omega (linear arithmetic over integers), ring (commutative-ring normalization), decide (decidable propositions by reflection), aesop (hammer-style search over Lean lemmas), polyrith (polynomial arithmetic). CPU-bound, no GPU, often sub-second. A surprising fraction of subgoals in any real proof close here. Capability-maximalist labs spend GPU on what aesop discharges instantly; the ladder never does.

Decision procedure

SMT / TABLEAUX / SAT

Z3, CVC5, Vampire, or Yices invoked from the kernel through a tactic interface. Discharges first-order theories with quantifiers, arrays, bit-vectors, linear and non-linear arithmetic — large decidable fragments at polynomial-to-exponential CPU cost. Orders of magnitude cheaper than tree search over LLM tokens for everything inside its envelope. The kernel re-checks the certificate; the SMT solver is a one-step oracle, not a trust root.

SMALL IN-DOMAIN MODEL · CONSTRAINED DECODE

A 1–7B model trained for tactic prediction inside the chosen prover, or an MoE with few active parameters per token. Grammar-constrained decoding restricts emission to tokens that keep the Lean term well-formed — kills the dominant waste of generate-then-fail-to-parse. The model proposes a tactic; the kernel applies and checks; only verified steps are kept. Active parameters multiplied by tokens emitted is the energy bound, so a 7B at fifty tokens beats a 671B at five.

GENERAL REASONING · WHOLE-PROOF DRAFT

A large reasoning model invoked only at the leaves the lower tiers cannot reach: high-level strategy, the genuinely-novel lemma, the bridge step. Long chain-of-thought reasoning is expensive per token and per call; the ladder reserves it for goals where cheaper tiers have provably failed. Whole-proof drafts get repaired locally on tactic failure (proof repair, not regeneration) — the most common waste mode in autonomous attempts.

Hybrid tree-search

STEP GENERATORS + VERIFIER + SEARCH

Best-first or MCTS over a proof tree, mixing the lower-tier solvers as step generators with verifier feedback as the reward signal. KV-cache sharing across sibling branches reuses the proof-state prefix instead of recomputing it — a search-specific serving optimization. The most expensive retrieval method by twelve orders of magnitude. Should be the last resort, not the default. Frontier and contest goals live here; nothing else should.

The cost gap

T0 through T2 are eleven to thirteen orders of magnitude lower-cost than T4 per proof. A well-routed proof effort answers most subgoals at T0–T2 and reserves T3 and T4 for the leaves nothing cheaper can reach. The capability-maximalist default — route every subgoal through a frontier model — spends the upper-tier energy budget on goals omega closes in microseconds.

Joules per verified output, reported.

Every proof attempt is instrumented at both pools: GPU time via NVML for model forward passes, CPU time via RAPL for the kernel and SMT. Joules are reported alongside pass-rate, not as a footnote. The headline artifact is a success-rate-versus-joules Pareto plot. The wedge is visible or it is not.

The honest report is the distribution across the difficulty axis D, not the aggregate mean. Hard proofs have fat tails. A clean mean conceals which goals the cheap tiers absorbed and which fell all the way to T4. The breakdown by D is the only report that survives Amdahl pressure.

The harness, in one paragraph

Datasets: miniF2F, ProofNet, PutnamBench for the open mathematical record. A held-out code-verification set for the engineering record. Measured: wall-clock, tokens, GPU-seconds, CPU-seconds — converted to joules via device-level power telemetry (NVML for the GPU pool, RAPL for the CPU pool). Baselines: the same open prover without the router or levers; reported figures from open-weight systems where available. Output: J/proof distribution by D, plus the Pareto frontier. Reproducibility class (R) recorded per run.
